Distinguished Delegates,
Dear Friends,

With less than a month to go, IsarMUN 2012 is drawing ever closer. Yesterday our regular application deadline closed. This year’s turn-out has been exceptional, with more than a hundred MUN veterans and newly interested students from all over the world registering for our 3-day student conference in Tutzing. We are currently in the process of assigning country positions to all delegates. However, we are also happy to announce that a handful of positions may still remain open for latecomers. We have provided an updated and shortened country list. For those delegates who wish to book accommodation, our new extended deadline will last until December 5th, 10:00 AM. After that deadline, we can not provide housing in Tutzing anymore. Applications may close earlier, if all positions are filled.

Please refer to our Apply Now!-Section for further information and note that applications are binding at this point.

Stay tuned for more information on social events and guest speakers at IsarMUN 2012 over the coming weeks. Also, please take note that Study Guides, containing detailed information for each committee, will become available shortly after your country assignments have been sent out.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to welcoming you all at IsarMUN 2012 in Tutzing.

Best Regards,

22. Oktober 2012: Registration for chairs is now closed. Thank you for your applications!

Honorable Delegates,
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

we currently are looking for young and inspired individuals willing to assume the responsibility of chairing one of four committees within the upcoming conference.

An ideal chairperson is characterized by sensitivity for the themes and aspirations of his or her committee, with good knowledge of procedural rules and diplomatic conduct, as well as the social skills required to engage delegates in lively debate. Since all of our sessions are held in English, a very good command of the language is essential. Previous chairing experience is very much appreciated.

The following Councils and Committees are planed for this years conference:

United Nations Security Council

United Nations Human Rights Council

European Council (Foreign Affairs Council)

Syria Conference

Chairs may apply for one or more councils and determine topics of their choosing. In the upcoming weeks, they should be able to prepare study guides, which will be made available online prior to the conference.

We would like to especially encourage local students to apply for this unique opportunity. Please send your applications with a short Letter of Motivation and Curriculum Vitae to info@isarmun.org.

We look forward to reading your applications,

Honorable Delegates, dear (future) friends of IsarMUN,

It is with great honour and sincere pleasure that we invite you to Isar Model United Nations 2012. Held on the shores of beautiful Lake Starnberg, our conference aspires to be a realistic and challenging portrayal of the United Nations. But perhaps even more than that, we aim to capture the unifying spirit of MUNs all over the world, by promoting the profound ideals laid forth in the U.N. charter: our common responsibility for lasting peace and human progress.

The 5th annual IsarMUN will be held from December 14th to 16th at the ‚Akademie für Politische Bildung’ (Academy of Civic Education) in Tutzing, just outside of Munich. Bringing together a hundred students from various backgrounds and fields of study, we hope to assemble four committees and discuss some of the most pressing issues facing the international community today. With selected guest speakers and social events, we are also working hard to offer you a thought-provoking, exciting and fun supporting programme.

IsarMUN is organized by students from both the Technische Universität (TUM) of Munich and Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), with kind support of the Institute for Political Science at LMU. Courtesy of our hosts in Tutzing, we are very happy to announce that we will be able to provide boarding rooms at the venue. However, since availability is limited, we can only provide this service on a first-come-first-served basis. More information on this will follow, when Early Registration opens in October. Thank you for your understanding.

Whoever you are, whereever you’re from – we can not wait to see your unharnessed creativity, diplomatic skill and determined cooperation at IsarMUN. Please join us and let’s make this year’s conference an unforgettable experience.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in December,

When does someone have the opportunity to be part of a body making decisions which have an echo that the world would still sense years after. The feeling of it is possible during a Model United Nation and 15 delegates from different universities all over Germany and even one American university took part in an UNSC simulation of the IsarMUN 2011. Before the simulation itself the Co-Chair of the UNSC, Nicki Weber, and me had quite a tough time to prepare the simulation of this powerful committee. What topics would be complex enough and still be well-known? What “special situation” would we choose to confront the delegates and give them an additional challenge? To answer the first question: we decided for two classical topics for the agenda setting. So, in December the situation in Afghanistan and the situation in Somalia were on the Agenda of the UNSC at IsarMUN 2011. During the first session the delegates discussed lively about the two topics and in the end the decisive turn originated from the US picking the latter topic as its focus. After some attempts to vote on the agenda and due to the remark of the Chair that the dais would decide about the agenda should the delegates not come to the necessary majority of nine in favor of one topic, Somalia became the topic to be dealt with.

After hard times of setting the agenda the delegates held their speeches on the topic of Somalia. Unmoderated Caucuses were excluded totally. Instead, moderated caucuses were used to find the delicate points and to discuss them. As a whole the subject was not easy for the committee, thus the main details had to be found first. The topic of Afghanistan seemed to be easier to handle: in that way the committee’s decision was wise.
The second session started in the same mode. It was in one of these two sessions when the map of Somalia was put on the wall, due to the initiative of the United States, to localize the problems and to get a clearer idea of the region to be dealt with. In the middle of the second session working papers were introduced which already read as draft resolutions. The discussions about them were lively. Different groups worked on different working papers and it looked like it would become hard to combine them. Still it seemed that the members didn’t really work against each other. But it became evident that time was short. In addition during the second session a crisis between Iran and Israel came up. After the third news about the crisis the delegates decided to change the topic and put the crisis on the agenda. The Secretary General was asked to speak about the situation. After that the two delegates of Iran and Israel were asked to come to the Security Council to be questioned. They were grilled but defended the positions of their countries very well. A quick solution did not seem likely but the UNSC kept the topic and adopted a resolution in the third session. The resumption of the topic on Somalia took place quickly and constructive work under extreme time pressure was essential. To get around a difficult voting procedure the committee tried to solve conflicts beforehand and put the draft resolution on the wall. The delegates worked constantly in unmoderated caucuses. Only a few times the chair asked the delegates to report about the results. Special points were discussed in moderated terms. In the last session the draft resolution was finalized by the typing fingers of the United Kingdom. Straight after that the committee closed debate and went into voting procedure. Last questions got answered. The delegates were only critical about Russia which could veto the resolution. All others were pretty content with it. In the second round of the roll call vote the resolution passed without any votes against.

It was a great committee, very well-prepared delegates, eloquent, effective and constructive in their work. And as in the years before, the debate was very lively and intense. Perhaps in future one will see one or the other on the international stage. Why not?
